Discover the wines of Austria, a country where dramatic Alpine landscapes, cool continental climates, and centuries of winemaking tradition come together in the glass. We’ll explore Austria’s iconic Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, from crisp, mineral-driven whites to richer, more complex styles, while also uncovering the country’s lesser-known red varieties. Along the way, we’ll dive into Austria’s major wine regions, unique vineyard sites, climate and soils, and the appellation system that shapes its wines. We’ll taste four wines that showcase the diversity of Austrian wine and discover why this small country produces some of Europe’s most exciting bottles.

Instructor Bio: Victoria Tuzet
Originally from Montréal, Canada, Victoria recently relocated to the Upper Valley after several years in Southern California. A passionate traveler with a deep curiosity for wine, she plans her adventures around the world’s most celebrated wine regions whenever possible. Her wine travels have taken her through Napa and Sonoma in California; Bordeaux, the Loire Valley, Champagne, Provence, and Alsace in France; Valpolicella and the tiny towns of Tuscany in Italy; Spain’s Rioja and Cava regions; Portugal’s Douro and Porto; and even the volcanic vineyards of the Canary Islands.
Victoria spent four months living in Spain, immersing herself in the local wine culture, and later worked the 2022 harvest in France’s Rhône Valley, assisting with winemaking at an organic and biodynamic estate. She holds her WSET Level 3 Award in Wine and is currently completing the WSET Diploma, with expected graduation in 2026. When she’s not talking terroir or vintages, you’ll likely find her watching documentaries, attempting to bake, or crafting between tastings.

We’ll be tasting:
Vini Ragerra Vino Rosso “Fadò Fadò
Vini Ragerra Nizza DOCG
A young winery, set in the ancient hills of Monferrato in the province of Asti. Keith O’Gorman and his wife Laura found this special place in the Barbera boasting village of Agliano Terme. Their property came with an old 2.1 acres-vineyard, an old farmhouse and a fruit orchard. In the old days, farmers cultivated mixed polyculture vineyards, where it was common to plant various varietals together with little to no semblance of organization or design. These farmers crafted blends from multiple grape varieties because each added a unique element to the finished wine: Barbera for color, Grignolino for tannin and fruit, Moscato for sugar and sweetness and so forth. As monocultures are a man-made phenomenon and do not occur naturally, Keith took pride in his vineyard's diverse composition and thus crafted their Vino Rosso to honor this style. Each year brings a different blend, as they have 53 unique varietals growing on site, so this wine is the result of evolutionary experimentation. Each year they plant new species to continue the diversity of the project and wine.
All their wines are organically made, as they are strict disciples of bio-farming and regenerative viticulture though they have no certifications. Their land is treated like a garden where everything is done by hand, foregoing the use of heavy machinery and industrialized interference.
The winery’s name is a nod to Keith's Gaelic ancestors. “Ragaireacht (Ra-Gerra)”: An Irish Gaelic word for late night wandering or sitting up talking long into the early hours.

Why does Burgundy have such a devoted following? Burgundy has a reputation for being complicated, expensive, and impossible to understand, but we promise it’s worth the love affair. It starts with a fascinating landscape of limestone soils, cool continental climate, rolling hills, and thousands of tiny vineyard parcels that have been carefully mapped and cultivated for centuries. In this class, we’ll break down Burgundy from north to south, talk through its appellations and famous vineyard hierarchy, and explore how Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reflect their individual sites. Burgundy has a reputation for being complicated, expensive, and impossible to understandWe’ll taste four wines (two whites and two reds), to see how dramatically these grapes can express themselves from one village, vineyard, and appellation to the next.

Originally from Montréal, Canada, Victoria recently relocated to the Upper Valley after several years in Southern California. A passionate traveler with a deep curiosity for wine, she plans her adventures around the world’s most celebrated wine regions whenever possible. Her wine travels have taken her through Napa and Sonoma in California; Bordeaux, the Loire Valley, Champagne, Provence, and Alsace in France; Valpolicella and the tiny towns of Tuscany in Italy; Spain’s Rioja and Cava regions; Portugal’s Douro and Porto; and even the volcanic vineyards of the Canary Islands.
Victoria spent four months living in Spain, immersing herself in the local wine culture, and later worked the 2022 harvest in France’s Rhône Valley, assisting with winemaking at an organic and biodynamic estate. She holds her WSET Level 3 Award in Wine and is currently completing the WSET Diploma, with expected graduation in 2026. When she’s not talking terroir or vintages, you’ll likely find her watching documentaries, attempting to bake, or crafting between tastings.

We’ll be tasting 3 wines:
“San Patelu” Grignolino d’Asti DOC
“Aris” Freisa d’Asti DOC
“La Martina” Barbera d’Asti DOCG
The name Crotin 1897 refers to all the years Daniela Russo's land has been in her family. She met her Calabrian husband in veterinary school--they both practice natural medicine for animals--and their three boys grew up in Calabria, by the sea. Going back home to make organic wine from the native grapes of Piemonte has been a family affair. Now grown, the three Russo brothers, Federico, Marcello and Corrado, work together managing the vineyards, the cellar, and the B&B in their charming family home. Besides touring the small cantina, visitors to the estate can walk through Daniela’s large vegetable garden, meet Federico’s award-winning hunting dogs, and observe the neighbor’s small flock of sheep ambling home in the waning daylight.
Tucked away in the rolling Monferrato hills, near the village of Maretto, Crotin is a testament to the Asti region’s rustic mix of vineyards, forests and farms. “Rustic” isn’t the right word for Crotin’s wines, however, not with winemaking of such consistent high quality that the monovarietal bottles sing with varietal typicity. The family’s devotion to the indigenous varieties of the region is clear, as new projects work to rescue grapes that have nearly died out. Each vineyard possesses a unique, fascinating geological profile, and each of these honest wines has an exceptional value."
Crotin translates to “little cellar” in Piemontese dialect.
Total vineyard size 24 acres. First vintage in 2002. Organic transition started in 2014, in 2018 they became certified organic in Italy. Total annual production: 40,000 bottles/ 3,333 cases.

A Night in Austria at Putnam’s
Join us Friday, September 18 from 5–7pm for an evening of Austrian wine, good stories, and a little shopping incentive.
Artisanal Cellars will be joining our wine team to pour three Austrian wines throughout the evening—with plenty of opportunity to taste, ask questions, and hear the stories behind the wines and the people who make them.
And we’re going beyond the tasting: 8+ Austrian producers will be represented throughout the retail shop, with bottles available to take home.

Riesling is famous among sommeliers as the ultimate chameleon of the wine world, capable of expressing terroir like no other grape. We’ll guide you through the deductive tasting method to analyze a stunning lineup of global styles—ranging from bone-dry and electric to aromatic and lush. Whether you're looking to sharpen your tasting grid or just want to prove your friends wrong in a blind lineup, this class is the perfect mix of wine theory and sensory fun.

Instructor Bio: Victoria Tuzet
Originally from Montréal, Canada, Victoria recently relocated to the Upper Valley after several years in Southern California. A passionate traveler with a deep curiosity for wine, she plans her adventures around the world’s most celebrated wine regions whenever possible. Her wine travels have taken her through Napa and Sonoma in California; Bordeaux, the Loire Valley, Champagne, Provence, and Alsace in France; Valpolicella and the tiny towns of Tuscany in Italy; Spain’s Rioja and Cava regions; Portugal’s Douro and Porto; and even the volcanic vineyards of the Canary Islands.
Victoria spent four months living in Spain, immersing herself in the local wine culture, and later worked the 2022 harvest in France’s Rhône Valley, assisting with winemaking at an organic and biodynamic estate. She holds her WSET Level 3 Award in Wine and is currently completing the WSET Diploma, with expected graduation in 2026. When she’s not talking terroir or vintages, you’ll likely find her watching documentaries, attempting to bake, or crafting between tastings.

Pour For Planned Parenthood
Join us at Putnam’s for Pour for Planned Parenthood, a day of rosé, community, and supporting reproductive freedom.
We’ll be raising funds in support of the ‘Planned Parenthood After Hours’ fundraiser, benefiting the Planned Parenthood Vermont Action Fund (PPVTAF) and their ongoing advocacy work across Vermont.
Here’s how you can participate:
30% of every glass of rosé sold at the bar will be donated to PPVTAF.
10% of every bottle of rosé purchased from our retail shop will be donated to PPVTAF.
The Planned Parenthood Vermont Action Fund works to protect and advance reproductive rights and access to essential health care through advocacy, education, and civic engagement. Their work helps ensure that Vermonters have a voice in policies affecting reproductive health, bodily autonomy, and access to care.
So come have a glass (or take a bottle home!), bring a friend, and drink pink for a good cause. Every pour helps support the fight for reproductive freedom here in Vermont!
